Ask Steve: Not all protein powders are created equal! (Part 3)

Are you concluding that any plant-based protein is good enough for everyday supplementation?

As with many food nutrition products, there are varying quality levels of plant-based proteins available today. Due to economics, soy-based protein powders are the most common available. However, they do only offer one dimensional nutrition for our bodies. I would recommend that we consider protein powders that derive from multiple sources of plant proteins, such as pea protein, rice protein, kale and many more. Multiple sources of plant proteins tend to offer richer and wider spectrum of nutrients. It is also vital that you get sufficient protein per serving, as you should get ideally at least 20g of protein.

It would also be recommended to consider ingredients that are fermented, as they provide good fibre and digestive enzymes that can aid the digestion of the proteins. These proteins are more bioavailable and readily absorbed by our bodies. Not to mention, some of fermentation may also provide some basic probiotics and prebiotics, that can help with our general well-being altogether.

Last but not least, I would personally emphasize on taste. Many plant-based proteins tend to taste bad, unfortunately. Many equate it them as tasting like cardboard. This is especially true for single plant-based proteins. As you would consume this supplement on a daily basis, I would recommend that you find one that have multiple sources of plant proteins, coupled by natural and organic wholefoods. They tend to taste much better personally.
